AMT member Hardinge Inc., a global provider of high-precision, computer-controlled machine tool and workholding solutions, will be reshoring its General Precision Turning and Milling production line from its Taiwan facility to Elmira, New York over the next 18 months. Hardinge will be modernizing and increasing the capability at its Elmira plant to accommodate the increase in production capacity.

鈥淗eadquartered in the United States for almost 130 years, we are excited to bring a key part of our production line back to the United States to support American manufacturing,鈥 said Jeremy Michael, director of turning & milling for the United States and Europe. 鈥淩eshoring will enable us to provide shorter lead times and greater flexibility to meet the demands of our customers both domestically and abroad. It also allows us to harness the engineering and production capability used to build the best in class Hardinge Super-Precision庐 horizontal lathe as we develop our next generation of turning and milling products.鈥

The first General Precision products to roll off the line in Elmira will be the Hardinge Talent 51 CNC lathe in February 2021. This will be followed by the new Bridgeport XR1000 CNC Vertical Machining Center in May, with the XR1320 Vertical Machining Center and Talent 51 Twin Spindle Twin Turret Multi-Tasking Lathe to follow later in the year. The principal industries that the turning and milling product lines will serve are medical device, automotive, aerospace, heavy equipment, and machine shop manufacturing.

鈥淩eshoring this product line will also lead to a significant headcount increase over the next 18 months in our Elmira facility, which already handles production of our standard Workholding, Super-Precision庐 Lathes, and Bridgeport Knee Mill line,鈥 said Michael.

Hardinge Inc. is a global provider of metal-cutting turning machines, grinding machines, machining centers, collets, chucks, index fixtures, repair parts, standard and specialty workholding devices, and other machine tool accessories. Hardinge products brands include Hardinge Lathes, Bridgeport Mills, Kellenberger, Voumard, Hauser, Usach, Tschudin, and Jones & Shipman Grinders as well as Hardinge, Forkardt, and Buck Chuck Workholding.
