Digital Manufacturing: Edge Computing

Edge computing devices offer a variety of benefits, such as improved data collection, enhanced network stability, and improved security. Edge computing devices can be used to create a secure barrier between equipment and the main network, as well as to simplify resource management responsibilities by providing a clear demarcation between IT and OT resources. It is important to do the necessary engineering and planning for edge computing devices before they are installed, and there is a cost associated with adding them to the network infrastructure. However, the benefits of using edge computing devices can justify this cost.

Intro Title Here

AMT is creating a series of white papers to provide practical information to its members and the industry at large, addressing the technologies that are important to the implementation of digital manufacturing solutions. This series of papers includes an overview document, 鈥淥verview of Digital Manufacturing: Data-Enabled Decision-Making,鈥 supplemental documents providing deeper dives into key technologies, and use case documents exhibiting how these technologies have impacted individual manufacturing operations. This information will be useful to business managers, manufacturing professionals, and project managers in small- to medium-sized discrete parts manufacturing operations. In these documents, we explore digital manufacturing from the viewpoint of the manufacturing shop floor and the technologies utilized when deploying systems for the collection, management, and analysis of manufacturing information.
